Haaland turned down the Netflix movie to keep it a secret
Striker Erling Haaland did not agree to let Netflix make a documentary about the art of scoring goals to keep his personal secrets.
According to British newspaper Sportmail , Netflix is attracted by the success of "Quarterback" - an eight-episode series released in July 2023 introducing the lives of three NFL quarterbacks during the 2022 season.
"Quarterback" meticulously chronicles the lives of NFL stars Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota, with intimate moments with family, friends and coaches both on and off the field. They also announced plans for a second season of "Quarterback," titled "Receiver," which is expected to premiere this summer.
Accordingly, Netflix wants to produce a documentary with similar content focusing on soccer strikers, specifically the art of scoring goals. This film is expected to provide a comprehensive look behind the scenes, much like "Quarterback", revealing to fans insights into the lives of top strikers. One of the people targeted is Erling Haaland.
However, Haaland reportedly refused to participate when approached. According to Goal , he wants to keep personal secrets, and this is a big step backward for filmmakers when he is the top striker in the Premier League.
Haaland scored 29 goals in 27 matches for Salzburg and 86 goals in 89 matches for Dortmund. The Norwegian striker came to Man City last season for $63 million and immediately exploded. He scored 52 goals in 53 matches in all competitions, helping Man City win three Champions League titles, Premier League, FA Cup, and many records. This season, despite a break of ten matches due to a foot injury, Haaland still has 29 goals in all competitions, including 18 goals in the Premier League and six in the Champions League.
Netflix also approached Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah with a similar proposal to Haaland, but the duo have not made a final decision. In the Premier League this season, Watkins scored 16 goals and 10 assists in 29 matches, while Salah had 15 goals and nine assists in 22 matches.
Arsenal - the club holding the top position in the Premier League - does not have any players currently on Netflix's radar. Bukayo Saka is Arsenal's highest scorer with 13 goals in the Premier League.
If the series about the Premier League striker goes ahead, filming is expected to begin at the start of the 2024-2025 season in August with an expected release date of fall 2025. The documentary is The proposal would add to the recent surge in football-themed series.
Amazon Prime's documentary "All or Nothing" is at the forefront of this field, providing an in-depth look at famous football clubs around the world, including Man City, Tottenham, Arsenal in the Premier League, Juventus in Serie A and national teams such as Brazil and Germany.
