Learn your computer's rest modes (Sleep, Hibernate and Shut Down)
First of all, we will need to understand the different ways to "shut down" the computer
Sleep mode (Sleep, Standby): This is not really a shutdown mode because even though the computer is turned off, it still provides power for RAM to operate. With this mode, you just need to move the mouse or press a key and your computer will return to normal operation. In Sleep mode, laptops and desktops often keep the power light on (or flashing).
Hibernate mode: With this mode, all data you are working on will be saved to the hard drive and then turned off. When you reboot, the data you saved will be read from the hard drive into RAM, allowing the operating system to return to the same state it was in before the shutdown. This will cause the boot process to take longer than usual
Shut Down mode: The computer will turn off completely and will not save information on RAM memory. When you restart the computer, the computer will perform the entire boot process again.
Why does your computer continue to use power when it's turned off?
With different modes, your computer will have a clear purpose for power consumption. In Sleep mode, the computer will need electricity to support RAM to store information. With Shut Down or Hibernate modes, your computer will still consume power because the motherboard will retain power to listen for "events" and automatically turn on the computer when it receives a signal. For example, the following modes will consume computer power
Wake on Keyboard or Mouse (automatically turn on the device when there is a signal from the mouse or keyboard)
The computer may turn on automatically when you press the mouse or a key on a connected keyboard. To do this, the computer will have to maintain power to the mouse and keyboard connection ports waiting for a signal
Wake-on-LAN
This is a feature that turns on the computer from the LAN port even when the computer is turned off. The computer will receive a specialized data packet sent through the LAN port to help wake up the computer. And of course, to be able to do this, the computer will have to provide power to the LAN (Ethernet) port and wait to receive the specialized data packet mentioned above.
In addition, in order for the computer to keep the time and settings in the BIOS, the computer will also consume a small amount of power.
How to reduce computer power consumption when turned off?
If you want to keep a tight handle on your electricity bill, there are many ways to reduce your computer's power consumption when it's turned off.
You can unplug the computer power cord when Shut Down or Hibernate without worrying about possible damage to the hardware. If you don't like unplugging the power cord, currently on the power unit (PSU) of the desktop, there will be a switch for you to turn off the computer's power.
As mentioned above, the computer will consume power for features such as waking up with the mouse, keyboard or via the LAN port. Please access your computer's BIOS and turn off these features (Wake-on-Lan, Wake on Keyboard or Mouse, Wake on USB)
