According to famous Czech player Patrick Berger, starting Cristiano Ronaldo will be the weakness of the Portuguese team at Euro 2024.
On June 18, Portugal will open Group F with a match against the Czech Republic, Berger's hometown team. The former midfielder who reached the Euro 1996 final told BoyleSports on April 5: "If Cristiano Ronaldo starts in the match against the Czech Republic at Euro 2024, I will be very happy.
Portugal has a great team and can won the championship even without Ronaldo in the starting lineup. They have a much bigger chance if he doesn't play from the start. If he sits on the bench, I will be more worried about the Czech Republic."
Berger believes that Portugal should have started Ronaldo on the bench in every match at the 2022 World Cup. He asserted that if he had done that, Portugal could have reached the final and competed for the championship with Argentina.
At the 2022 World Cup, Ronaldo started all three group stage matches, but only scored one goal from the penalty spot. After that, he only came on the field from the 74th minute of the 6-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16 and from the 51st minute of the 0-1 loss to Morocco in the quarterfinals.
According to Berger, the best time for Ronaldo to play for Portugal is the last 25 minutes. He argued that CR7 always has a chance, so playing less does not affect the team much. "It would have been better for Portugal if Ronaldo had played as a substitute two years ago in Qatar, but with ego and things like that, it's difficult to get rid of him," Berger added. "His age is a hindering factor, even if he is one of the best players of all time."
Ronaldo holds the record of scoring 128 goals in 206 matches at the international level. The 39-year-old striker also scored 42 goals in 41 matches for Al Nassr in the 2023-2024 season, including two hat-tricks in the last two matches.
In 2016, Ronaldo scored two goals in the group stage and one goal in the Euro semi-finals. He had to leave the field in the 25th minute in the final due to injury, but Portugal still won 1-0 against host France thanks to a goal from reserve striker Eder in the 109th minute.
In addition to the Czech Republic, Portugal also meets Turkey and Georgia in Group F of Euro 2024. The tournament includes 24 teams divided into six groups. The top two teams in each group and the four best third-placed teams will advance to the 1/8 round.
